TORAH AND JEWISH COMMUNITY

Every Jew who resides in a community is required to establish a synagogue and acquire a Torah Scroll for public Torah reading. To donate a Torah Scroll to the synagogue is a great mitzvah. Even if the community has a number of Torah Scrolls it is still a requirement that every member of the community write his own Torah Scroll. The more Torah Scroll are available, the more access we have to the communal worship and to the opportunity to spread the knowledge of Judaism. The presence of the Torah Scroll in the community ignites its members to widen their knowledge of the Laws of our tradition and elevates them on a higher level of the appreciation of the connection between Man and G-d.

Purchasing of the printed sacred books (sifrei kodesh) is a pivotal mitzvah, however it does not exempts anyone from the necessity to purchase a Torah Scroll. A person who commissions a scribe to write a Torah scroll on his behalf performs the mitzvah of writing a scroll and is considered as if he does it by himself.
